The Process
Cellulite is described as pockets of trapped fat underneath the skin that cause dimpling or an "orange peel" appearance on the surface of the skin. Cellulite forms in the hypodermis or subcutaneous fat layer, one of the three fat layers underneath the dermis and epidermis (layers of skin). Ninety percent of women will develop cellulite, usually in their thighs, stomach and buttocks. Cellulite occurs in women of all shapes and sizes, not just overweight women, as has been commonly believed.
There are two standard methods for determining if cellulite has begun to happen. With the Pinch Test, sections of skin are pinched between the index finger and thumb to determine if puckering is present. The second method is the Nurnberger - Muller scale, which is used by doctors to determine which stage of cellulite has occurred.
Cellulite happens in four stages. Stage 0 occurs when no dimpling or puckering appears on the skin, either standing or lying down. When the skin is pinched, it folds but doesn't dimple. Stage 1 is the beginning of cellulite formation. There is no dimpling when standing up or lying down, but pinched skin may appear somewhat lumpy. In Stage 2, dimpling occurs sporadically when standing up, though not when lying down. In Stage 3, the dimpling is noticeably visible without the benefit of pinching the skin.
Development of Cellulite
Cellulite develops when the adipose cells or "fat cells" swell due to excess fatty tissue, which causes a build-up of fluids. When this happens, the lymphatic drainage system is unable to release the stored fluid, toxins and fat, which restricts blood flow. The fat cells begin to cluster together and become fused with collagen fibers or connective tissues. Those strands of the connective tissue harden and drag on their anchor points. The restricted blood flow, lack of lymphatic drainage, stiff connective tissues and fat all converge to form cellulite.
Factors in the Development of Cellulite
There are three factors that contribute to cellulite: hormones, lifestyle and age.
Women are more susceptible to cellulite than men due to the numerous hormonal changes a woman's body undergoes including premenstrual syndrome, pregnancy, menopause, puberty, even taking birth control pills. Hormones help regulate lymphatic drainage, blood flow, connective tissue and fat, which all contribute to the development of cellulite.
While diet and exercise can impact some areas affected by cellulite, many parts of the body are immune. The appearance of cellulite can be exacerbated by not drinking enough water, weight gain and bad eating habits.
Finally, as the body ages, skin loses elasticity, tone and thickness, which results in more pronounced cellulite.
Cellulite Treatments
Cellulite can't be eliminated, though there are treatments that may reduce its appearance. These include over-the-counter creams and gels; body wraps in which the body is wrapped in linens and brushed with herbal extracts, and massage, which promotes lymphatic drainage. "...First of all, this program is a lot concerning obtaining the suitable information on the difficulty of cellulite, or in my case, , orange skin behind. Though diet and exercise can reduce overall body fat and improve the appearance of cellulite, they can't get rid of it.
